Little Socks

I see your little socks gliding toward the grass, caught in the wind, and pause

Watching them fall, the story of you fills my heart and soul,

When you smiled the first time just for me, the unexpected ‘achoo’ giggle,

Your sweet baby cuddles and that smiling peep around the corner after a nap, when you used to crawl toward me on those pudgy toes;

When you tighten your arms around my neck, and your hand pats my shoulder

The way you erupt in a burst of noises to celebrate every truck and school bus you hear,

As you gasp in wonder at the feel of dirt falling through your fingers, “Ooh!”, you say, and your eyes widen with everything new,

How you always look back at me to share the moment life has just given to you;

I marvel at your wispy blonde cowlick that sparkles in sunlight and crackles with electric air as you slide, and how much fun every routine thing is when you are by my side;

The humming sounds you make from the joy of a delicious taste, the excited flush of happiness on your face;

As your socks grow in size and your mind becomes wise, there will be a lot of adventures big and small

You’ll pick peppers and flowers, run through the park, eat lemons and orange peels, dance about excavators, and find a million new things to learn and explore;

I love being your Grammy and will treasure every moment we share together through them all!
